The Electrical Products Laboratory

The services offered by the laboratory include: testing of batteries and light bulbs, calibration services, evaluation of electrical products and appliances, and measurement of light and noise levels.

Testing Services

Lead-Acid Starter Batteries: Testing of 12Volt lead-acid starter batteries up to 1000 cranking amps, for compliance with the compulsory Trinidad and Tobago Standard (TTS 179:1997).

Tungsten Filament Lamps (Household Bulbs): Testing of tungsten filament lamps to the requirements of the compulsory Trinidad and Tobago Standard (TTS 26 25 500:1993).

Electrical Cables: Evaluation of electrical cables (armoured and unarmoured) and flexible cords for physical requirements, insulation resistance, conductor resistance and dimensional requirements to Trinidad and Tobago Standards (TTS) and British Standards (BS).

Electrical Appliances: Evaluation of new and used electrical products for electrical safety and performance requirements to Trinidad and Tobago Standards (TTS), Underwriter Laboratory (UL) Standards, and applicable International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Standards. These appliances include refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, dryers, water heaters, shower heaters, fans, electric ranges, televisions, stereo equipment, personal grooming appliances, kitchen appliances, and many others.

Noise Level Measurement: The laboratory conducts noise level measurements to IEC and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standards to assess levels of frequency distribution (Octave Analysis). This is used in determining hearing protection needs and noise reduction requirements

Light Level measurements: Light levels (visible wavelengths) are measured in accordance with International Standards Organization (ISO) ergonomic Standards. These measurements are used in assessing workstation light levels for homes, offices, factories and inspection stations.

Calibration Services

A range of traceable calibrations for electrical measuring instruments can be reliably executed, including:

  • High Resistance Ohmmeters (Meggers) to 10 G
  • Clamp-on Ammeters (AC/DC to 800 Amps.).
  •  Multimeters up to 8 digits.
  • DC High Potential Insulation Testers (Highpots) to 40kV.
  •  Earth Resistance Testers.
  •  Relay Test sets.
  •  Process Meters.
  •  Thermocouple Calibrators.

These calibrations are carried out using state-of –the-art calibration instruments and Standards that are traceable to internationally recognized (measurement) standards from the Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States of America, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the UK and Physikalisch-Technische Bundesansalt (PTB) in Germany.

Other Activities

Consumer affairs Division: The Electrical Products laboratory assists the Consumer Affairs Division of the Ministry of Legal Affairs in handling consumer complaints with respect to defective electrical items and in projects designed to test and rank various types of electrical products.

Underwriters Laboratory: In Trinidad and Tobago there are five manufacturers that produce items which are authorized to carry the Electrical Listing mark of Underwriters Laboratories. The Electrical Laboratory acts as an Inspection center for UL, visiting each manufacturer several times per year to inspect the finished products to ensure that components of the required quality are being used in their manufacture.

The Laboratory also confirms that if a part must be substituted for any reason, the substitute part must be of comparable quality as the original and must be approved by UL.
