Standards are drawn up at international, regional and national levels. The coordination of the work at these three levels is ensured by common structures and cooperation agreements.
International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
TTBS is a full member of International Organization for Standardisation (ISO). This allows TTBS to participate in several ways in international standardization, including participation on ISO committees and voting on ISO draft standards.
ISO Technical Committees
TTBS participates on several of ISO's TC committees, which allows Trinidad and Tobago to be part of the decision-making process in standardization at the international level.
Some of these committees include:
- TC 28 – Petroleum products and lubricants
- TC 34 – Agricultural food products
- TC 176 – Quality management and quality assurance

Memoranda of Understanding (MOU)
The standard development process is aided by Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) between national/regional standards bodies and Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards. These MOUs allow the use of national/regional standards through adoption/adaptation to avoid duplication of work where necessary, as well as the strengthening of communications and sharing of resources between the two organizations.
TTBS has signed MOUs with the following standard bodies:
- ASTM International ( www.astm.org )
- British Standards Institute - BSI
